Allergies

It's common for pets to have allergies, just as many of us humans do! Some animals have minor allergy symptoms. They may have some itching, skin rashes, watery eyes, sneezing, or ear infections. Other pups get more serious, gastrointestinal symptoms, such as vomiting and diarrhea. Allergies can be frustrating to manage sometimes. The good news? We are here to help guide you through preventing and alleviating allergy-related issues.

Allergies are basically caused by the immune system overreacting to something. It can be very frustrating to get to the bottom of what is causing an allergy. Insect bites, mold, pollen, mites, cleaners, and certain types of foods are all potential causes for your pet's allergies. If your dog has allergies with serious symptoms, we can send out a blood panel or refer you to a veterinary dermatologist to check for common allergies. For milder allergies, we can often treat symptomatically at home.

There are several medicated shampoos and mousses that help manage and treat skin allergies. If the itching is super severe or your pet already has an infection, there are prescription strength eye drops and oral medications available. Compromised skin can also lead to ear infections, which may be prevented with regular ear cleanings at home. If your pet is prone to specific types of ear infections, such as yeast, we might recommend a medicated ear wash to help prevent them.

One of the biggest triggers of skin allergies are flea bites. One flea bite can be absolutely miserable if your pet has an allergy to flea saliva. Even if you are not seeing fleas on your pet, regular flea prevention and keeping a clean home are imperative for these pups. It can be pretty impressive how many allergy issues seems to disappear with good flea prevention!
